Single panel cartoons are exactly what they're called... a cartoon made up of just one panel. These single panel cartoons generally contain practically any style of art imaginable along with a gag or punchline. Successful single panel cartoons usually have the gag or punchline in the forefront and the art must simply compliment.

Here's an example of a single panel cartoon:

<img:stuff/Battytoon.jpg>

Single panel cartoons can be found practically everywhere! Newspapers, magazines, advertisements... even on the web! The reason is because they're simple, independent, can cover any genre or topic and easily gets the point of humor across quickly.

Now that you know what a single panel cartoon is... it's time to work on your very own single panel cartoon! :D What we'll do here is agree on a subject matter/topic to make a cartoon about, set a deadline and let your imagination and creativity run wild!!! Writers and artists may do this on their own or may team-up if you like. The object is to make it as funny as possible with art that supports the punchline/gag. Your cartoon can be done in black & white or color. Just post your finished comic here in the wiki by the subject matter/topic's deadline. We'll then enjoy reading everyones cartoons, openly discuss and constructively crit them all in the comment section below afterwords. :) The experience should be fun, entertaining and educational. Thus is the theory of a workshop! :)

Cartoon #4
Subject: Dwarves & Elves

2009-06-08 [Sir. Robert]: I was a Calvin and Hobbes addict...and I remember all the great demented snowman scenes :P

2009-06-08 [deeterhi]: Peanuts had some great snowmen jokes as well :D

2009-06-08 [XxTsomexX]: im gonna put one up... though it may not be that good lol

2009-06-08 [Sunrose]: Whoo two entries :D

2009-06-09 [Hendercrazy]: Wow! Great job guys! :D Very funny stuff! :P Awesome to see some more folks hop on board with this. :) Thanks [Sir. Robert] and [XxTsomexX]!!!

Yeah, those Calvin and Hobbes snowmen strips were pure warped and hysterical genius!

2009-06-16 [Hendercrazy]: Just a quick reminder that the Snowmen cartoon is due this Sunday! Let your funny and art hang out! :D :P XD

2009-06-16 [Sir. Robert]: Can I upload another if I happen to get bored between now and Sunday?

Edit: Nvm...I got bored

2009-06-16 [Hendercrazy]: XD Sure! :) The more cartoons the better! :D Love the classic ACME steamroller machine! LMAO! XD

I'll have mine up on Sunday. Hope others continue to join in on the fun! Once again... thanks to all who contribute and keep this wiki stirring. ;)

2009-06-20 [Sir. Robert]: ...I finally got the drawbridge one! It took me a while, but about 4 beers in I looked at the drawbridge and realized it was on backwards ;P

2009-06-21 [Hendercrazy]: It's that time again for a friendly reminder! :D Cartoon #3 is due today! So put those finishing touches in gear and post 'em up in the wiki! [Sir. Robert] and [XxTsomexX] have already put up some funny cartoons! :P XD

I've some work left to do on mine as well. :)

2009-06-21 [Sir. Robert]: If I get back from bowling I will finish a last one to get rid of the steamroller ;P

2009-06-22 [Hendercrazy]: Love the lost kid in the giant snowball! XD Good stuff [Sir. Robert]! Also, I edited the page and put all of your cartoons together. ;)

Got my comic up with an hour to spare! :) I ended up not having much time tonight to give it full color. o_O

2009-06-22 [Sir. Robert]: lmao...yellow snow, my favorite flavor ;)

2009-06-22 [Sir. Robert]: I really wanted another 2 panels to work with because the steamroller was part of a 3 panel idea which would involve a police crime scene and a snowman "body" chalked into the asphalt :S

These single panel cartoons are hard because you have to tell an entire story with one picture and some text. I also need to improve my art... (quality not quantity)

2009-06-22 [Hendercrazy]: Each style of comic format certainly has it's own set of challenges. The single panel cartoons really force you to literally put it all out there for the reader in one shot to sell the punchline. It's really good practice for thinking out figures and scene layouts. :D This kind of practice on artistic vision will really help to build a solid foundation for your art. Quality and style will come with lots of practice, patience and fine tuning. :)

Perhaps it's time to start up the three panel comic strip? << >> <<

2009-06-24 [Sir. Robert]: I was guessing that the comic was a Monty Python reference, but to make sure I checked the name you uploaded it with :P

"Well, that's no ordinary rabbit. That's the most foul, cruel, and bad-tempered rodent you ever set eyes on."

2009-06-24 [iippo]: Sounds like you've had too much Monty Python too :P
http://xkcd.com/16/ :P

2009-06-24 [Sir. Robert]: LOL! ...That comic makes me feel bad for being able to quote 90% of the Holy Grail :S

I watched Life of Brian, Holy Grail, and finished with a Flying Circus marathon. I don't believe anyone could have too much Monty Python :)

2009-06-24 [iippo]: I think the entire xkcd is meant to make its readers feel bad about a whole lot of stuff.

2009-06-24 [Hendercrazy]: Funny stuff [iippo]! :D Welcome to the fray! :P

Looks like I should probably archive the current cartoons so we can make room for the next cartoon.

Anyone want to toss some possible topics for Cartoon #4?

2009-06-25 [Sir. Robert]: Bananas, "Awkward" Moments, Jokes Gone Horribly Wrong, Death by Falling Objects, Quirks/Excessive Compulsive, Electricity, ________'s on a plane, 3 Wishes, Bad Inventions ...I could go on for days :P

Btw...Are we going to workshop the comics at all?
